Decision making made easy…The Head The Heart The Gut

So, whether you are looking at starting a new business, selling something or buying anything, you use one of the above to make decisions. Let’s just say for all intents and purposes and for this post there are three different ways you could make a decision. I know through many a failed decision which now serves me…. do you?

Let’s start with the HEAD

Our brain really is programmed to protect us -thank goodness hey! Or is it?

When we think with our head, we will be very logical – here is the problem- weigh up the pros and cons = find the solution … we evaluate the problem using a combination of qualitative and quantitative criteria. We are very proud when we look at the list we have created, weighing up our pros and cons…. Very logical and a gentlemanly way for making and solving all problems and world issues, right?

My Story – When we were moving from our 27year home totally built for us on a beautiful 1000 square metre allotment, close to rainforests and the best schools on the coast, 5mins from CBD and 2 mins from beaches you would have to wonder why would you move?

Well, my husband created a pros and cons list and pulled out of the contract to buy a new property hours before the deadline! That’s what our head tells us to do.

How about the HEART You may have said or thought this about someone before –

“Wow that person has a lot of heart! “T

That’s our passion coming through, we can appear a little irrational or even emotional when we make the decisions based on the heart. How we feel in any given moment can determine the outcome of what we do. When we base our decisions using our heart which really considers a problem based on emotions some people would say you are using your “Lizard Brain”(flight fight emotional bonding) It feels great now but in hindsight some of those emotional choices aren’t always right in the long term have you ever used the saying “in hindsight I should have….!” If it feels heartfelt that’s all that matters when making a decision, right!

So, I saw this amazing property 17 acres and bringing in an income, we wouldn’t have to worry in our retirement about paying it off as its self-funding, it has beautiful trees with 100 s of fox tails my favourite palm trees, fruit trees, room for heaps of grandkids even though I have none right now! Full size tennis court, 10 x 5 pool, room for training rooms and Air B&Bs …. Passionate, irrational and at our retirement age why wouldn’t you do that! The heart says yes😊

Now for my go to first base of thinking it took 40 years to listen to!

The GUT

There is no explanation with the gut… no pros and cons, no wow I love it feeling -why wouldn’t I …this is the place people don’t want to go because it is a little quieter than the others not shouting pros and cons, creating our lists… the HEAD.  NOT I love it stuff, or let’s just do it! the HEART …

The Gut is quieter no explanation needed it knows. They say it is our intuitive source and that is why it is over looked because we can’t prove it. Wars would not begin if people went to their gut ….is it right to kill thousands of people? of course not. But our head has pros and cons and our heart is irrational and passionate.

To me the gut is my jiminy cricket -my conscious- it lets me know if something is right or wrong. For most people, they know it is their little voice they think is stopping them, nagging at them, is actually leading them to the right decision for them. And interestingly when we make a decision with our gut, they say” its position is usually lasting.” Unlike the head where we will go back and re-analyse our lists or the heart where it was right in the moment but maybe not now. Hhhmmm, in hindsight I should have …… don’t get me wrong you can make the others work in a zig zag pattern to where you want to go, lots of life lessons etc. I feel the GUT is almost that soul connection with yourself. So next time you are stuck in the thinking (head)or about to run off passionately to the next decision you love (heart) maybe just maybe try physically placing your hand on your gut, connect for a second, listen and ask “Is this right for me?”

SO, here we are now on the farm enjoying fresh air, collecting eggs, growing our food, playing with cows, doing up air B&Bs, travelling the world speaking and coming home to where our heart, head and gut are happy😊 love to hear how you make decisions too!
