How important is having a goal?

How important is having a goal?  More than ever, in a market like this, you cannot afford to waste your time or money.

Getting SMART and setting your goals, revisiting old goals and making things happen is the best bet for success.

Right now I want you to think of something you want to achieve by the end of this year; please write it down. Take your time at this point, look at what you have written down. Will you be happy if you hit this goal in the next 6 months? Are you smiling? If the answer is yes, then you can certainly archive this goal. If the answer is no, go back to the drawing board and write down a goal that will make you happy this year.

One of the big secrets to goal setting is it must be something YOU want to reach. Not a goal your partner wants you to achieve or someone else in the business world, but a goal that you want. When setting team goals, the team must be involved in the setting of the goal, so have team rewards as well as individual ones. You will be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Now that you have planted the seed, you need to make it grow. Take your goal with you over the next 30 days. Look at it as often as you can.

Now comes the good part…let’s make your goal SMARTER:

S – be specific about the goal (colour, size, prize etc). To set a specific goal you must answer the 5 ‘W’ questions.

  • What
  • Why
  • Who
  • Where
  • When

Mmeasure it. If you can’t measure it you can’t manage it. To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as:

  • How much? $
  • How many? Sales, kilos, enquires, products, etc.
  • How will I know when it is accomplished?

Aaction. What actions do you need to take to make this goal a reality?

Rrealistic. To know if your goal is realistic, determine if you have accomplished anything similar in the past or ask yourself what conditions would have to exist to accomplish this goal.

Ttime sensitive. When will the goal be achieved? For example, 2pm on the 30th of November 2017. Get serious and lock in the date. Saying you will achieve your goal in six months’ time doesn’t cut it. The most powerful goals are specific and time sensitive.

Eenthusiastic. If you’re not enthusiastic about this goal, you will not achieve it. Make sure the goal makes you smile.

Rreward. If you don’t reward yourself, you will not want to keep setting goals. Make it a habit to accept the reward and set your next goal.

Without a clear idea of what we are working towards, we procrastinate.

Goal setting has worked for thousands of years. The Romans used goals, the military uses goals and business leaders set goals. So why do you think some people are so successful? Just lucky? Think again…

People who succeed have goals, and people who have goals, succeed!

Looking forward to celebrating your success.
