Sales is Fun

Sales is Fun

Everyone to Bali for a sales lesson!

Sales is fun. Some adults have the gift; we all learnt the art of sales when we were little, but many of us have forgotten how good we are at it as we grow. Well, the most amazing network chain I’ve come across is working right on the beach at Kuta in Bali.

Big smiles, shaking of hands, names on hats – you won’t forget Polly for nails and hair, Lela the bead lady, Bob the carving man, Mabu for massage, Yoman the tattoo guy, Sonia with the anklets or Lulu the sarong lady.

Polly greets everyone with big smiles, wanting to know your name and shaking your hand (they all shake hands really well}. She makes sure you know her name and points to it on her hat, where it is written in two-inchhigh letters. I wasn’t going to forget Polly and I really suck at remembering names! (Tip: Don’t hide your name in small print on your name badge.)

Polly grabbed a stool, sat me down and off we went for a big chat. She introduced me to her friends, and when I mentioned getting a massage, she found someone for me. Whatever I needed – a drink, an umbrella, you name it – she would locate a colleague within her network chain and introduce me to them to work out a price for the product or service. I stuck to my prices and shared my buying power as I shook hands on a promise of returning another day and referring my friends. They were all happy in the end and I received excellent prices.

When I left, I gave them all bonuses, and they felt great about the excellent service they provided. (I knew if I gave the bonus at the beginning the prices would be too high from the start.)

My daughter stood in shock seeing what was happening, and when we left she thought I was hugely ripped off, but once I explained that for $20 she had just received a top, three bracelets, a glass beaded cross a new towel and a 30-minute massage she was happily surprised, but most importantly, we had just experienced a priceless afternoon of entertainment and a lesson for her on amazing customer service, product knowledge, networking skills, relationship building and deal making.

In Australia you may have to pay thousands to sit in a classroom to be taught these lessons and skills. Yet training combined with real-life experience is the most important training you can receive. Training on the job with the assistance of professional in the field to help you succeed is invaluable and can reflect on the above skills. When you are choosing a company for training choose one for real-life experiences. Put the trainers to the test for real-life examples and role plays. You will be surprised at your sales results.

I have known Catherine Molloy for three years. It started three years ago when I attended her workshop “Enhance your Cultural Awareness in International Communication” hosted by Xiamen Municipal Foreign Affairs Office. Impressed with her wonderful presentation and her deep understanding of importance of cross-cultural communications, I invited her last year to deliver a training session to over a dozen of our account managers at our Xiamen headquarter office. I invited her again last July to deliver a workshop “Service that sells” and a keynote “Selling Smarter in an International Market” to over 250 attendees at the 1st China Language Service Industry Collaborative Innovation Forum. Both the workshop and keynote were very well received by the audience.

I am very impressed with Catherine’s excellent communication and interpersonal skills, her deep understanding of building fruitful relationship, her lovely interaction with the audience, beautifully prepared presentation slides and handouts. She is willing to dig into different business areas and has a genuine desire to help others through training and communication.

Catherine practices what she teaches. She demonstrates her excellent communication and interpersonal skills and get to know her audience quickly and effectively. Her constant follow up and the result is terrific, a perfect example of how to build successful business relationship, even in a culture so different from her own.

I am very pleased to be contacted to discuss my very positive interactions and experiences with Catherine Molloy should you require any further information.
